Alcohol Tests

To check for alcohol, you need a blood test, urine test, saliva test or breathalyzer. Each of these tests has the same goal: to check how much alcohol is in your body. Usually, you get a result called in an alcohol concentration. The higher your alcohol concentration, the more alcohol is in your system. Most alcohol tests are used to detect current use up to 24 hours.

The easiest and most common type of alcohol testing is breath alcohol or breathalyzer. A breath alcohol test is currently the only alcohol test allowed for DOT testing.

An ethyl glucuronide (EtG) test detects the presence of ethyl glucuronide, a direct metabolite of ethyl alcohol, when someone has consumed alcohol. A urine EtG test can be used to detect consumption for up to 80 hours. A hair EtG test can be used to detect consumption for up to 90 days. An EtG test is used to monitor behavior, not to determine intoxication. EtG testing is commonly used for alcohol rehabilitation or DUI programs and for court-ordered testing situations. An EtG test can be ordered together with a drug panel.
